Editorial Policy

The rules we follow. Published so you can hold us to them.

What We Review

OSINTBench reviews tools used by OSINT practitioners: threat intelligence platforms, social media investigation tools, network reconnaissance utilities, dark web monitoring services, geospatial analysis software, identity verification tools, and related hardware and training resources.

We cover tools that working professionals actually use — security analysts, corporate investigators, threat intelligence teams, journalists, and law enforcement. Novelty projects and proof-of-concepts that aren't production-ready are described but not rated.

How We Rate

Every tool review uses a consistent five-criterion methodology:

  • Capability — What can it actually do? 30%
  • Usability — How easy is it to use effectively? 20%
  • Freshness — Is it actively maintained? 20%
  • Value — Is the pricing fair for what you get? 20%
  • Community & Support — Can you get help when stuck? 10%

Ratings use a 1.0–5.0 scale. In practice, most published reviews fall between 3.0 and 4.7 — not because we inflate scores, but because we frequently choose not to publish reviews of tools that score below 3.0. If a tool is that weak, we'd rather not generate traffic for a product no one should use. A low score is possible and sometimes warranted, but publishing it is an editorial judgment call, not an automatic outcome. A 3.0 means "usable with significant caveats." A 4.5+ means "best in class."

Independence

No vendor has editorial input into any review. We do not accept payment for reviews, early access in exchange for favorable coverage, or requests to adjust ratings.

OSINTBench participates in affiliate programs. When you click a link and make a purchase, we may earn a commission. This is disclosed on every page where affiliate links appear. Affiliate relationships never influence ratings, and tools without affiliate programs receive identical editorial treatment.

If a conflict of interest arises — for instance, if we were to develop a commercial relationship with a vendor whose tools we review — it would be disclosed prominently on the affected reviews.

AI Use

OSINTBench uses AI throughout the review pipeline. Research is automated, initial drafts are AI-generated, and AI assists with consistency scoring. Every review is read and approved by a human editor before publication. We believe this is the right trade-off for maintaining broad, fresh coverage of a fast-moving tool ecosystem.

For full details on how our pipeline works, see Our Review Process.

What We Won't Do

  • Publish step-by-step instructions for tools primarily used to cause harm
  • Review tools with no legitimate professional use case
  • Accept vendor-supplied review drafts or "suggested" ratings
  • Remove or soften negative findings under vendor pressure
  • Publish reviews without disclosing affiliate relationships

Corrections

If a review contains inaccurate information — wrong pricing, deprecated features, misrepresented capabilities — let us know. We correct errors promptly and note the correction on the review. Corrections are how we maintain trust with the community.
